New Theme Version: TwentyPlus from ThemeBrewers.com

Update: TwentyTen Extended now has a download page to get the latest version from.

TwentyTen Extended is a child theme of the default WordPress theme TwentyTen. I have integrated ThemeKit for WordPress into it so that users have the option of changing the theme styles without editing any code. Everything in TwentyTen Extended is just like TwentyTen other than the addition of a Settings menu under the Appearance section. Here a user can make TwentyTen any color they wish with just a few clicks of the mouse. Now you can have your cake and eat it too by making TwentyTen truly your own. If you would like to see it in action, check out http://blog.thickasabrick.net/.

I am working to get the theme up on WordPress.org. It has not yet been listed but you can download it from the link below if you like for now. Please feel free to leave a comment if you find a bug or have a feature request. They can also be submitted here: TwentyTen Extended on Lighthouseapp.com

If you do end up using TwentyTen Extended I would love to see it.

ThemeKit is what I have been using to build and modify WordPress themes. It is not a full theme framework like Genesis but is a high-powered option creator and a perfect complement to the Genesis framework. ThemeKit is usable with almost any theme framework and can be set up to run in either a parent or child theme with ease.

This is a basic example of how the settings screen created by ThemeKit looks. ThemeKit comes with many of the controls you would want to add prebuilt for you, from a basic textbox to a font/color/size selector with Google font support.

Below is a piece of the code used in the Cadet WordPress theme. As you can see it uses a format that is fairly standard for creating options. One of the features that a lot of other option creators don’t include is the ability to supply a selector. This will tell ThemeKit to write out styles in the header for that selector.

Self hosting WordPress can be a rewarding task if you can find a reliable hosting provider. Several months ago I wrote about WordPress hosting over on Think2Loud. At that time I had just finished moving everything over to VPS.net. Well, here we are about six month later and I have to admit that VPS.net is just awesome. VPS.net has been great to deal with, and my server has been up without an issue for months, other than me causing a few problems along the way trying to tweak things.

Here is the Pingdom chart starting from when I first set up monitoring back in November of 2010.

I currently have two machines running with VPS.net. The web server is running 4 nodes now with cPanel and LiteSpeed on CentOS. This setup has been working and all the sites hosted on it respond very quickly. I am also running W3 Total Cache and I did have a few issues with getting that set up correctly, which I plan to cover later.

Project Noah is a tool to explore and document wildlife and a platform to harness the power of citizen scientists everywhere.

They have a well-crafted, easy-to-use iPhone app that is great when you’re on the go. There is also an app for Android, but I haven’t used it. One of the nice things is that you can browse everything without having to sign up.

I decided that for 2011 I would create a new site for myself, along with all new content. So here we are just about a quarter of the way through the year and I have finally launched the site. After a few years as a front-end developer coding up others’ designs, I decided to give it a go on my own.

I have been building my design skills by reading and doing a lot of tutorials online. I also got some help from a few friends who are very accomplished designers. Anyhow, this new site is my first design that I am releasing onto the world. You have to start somewhere. I am sure there will be a redesign in the future as I improve my skills as a designer. My next goal is to design and release my own WordPress theme on ThemeForest. Should be and interesting year.

Thanks for stopping in.
